Description:

The Pacific AIDS Education & Training Center HIV Learning Network (HIVLN) is a free telehealth HIV mentoring, training and consultation program for HIV clinical care teams and individual clinicians in Arizona, California, Hawai`i, and Nevada. HIVLN provides bimonthly live, on-line mentoring and consultation sessions on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 12:00-1:00 pm PST.

The goal of the program is to expand access to high quality HIV care and improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable people living with HIV who are residing in historically low-resourced and under-served communities in the region, but open to all within the US.

What We Do:

  • Meet twice a month in an easily accessible online format
  • Learn the latest HIV treatment advances
  • Share challenging cases and learn from your colleagues
  • Connect community providers with regional HIV specialists to strengthen the HIV care system

HIVLN is designed to provide a community of practice for HIV learners of all skill levels. Sessions are divided into 2 main sections:

  • Case or clinical topic discussion and
  • Short interactive presentation

Leading HIV experts throughout the region present HIV-related topics to support and expand participating health care providers’ HIV knowledge base and clinical skills. Case discussions include relevant teaching cases from HIV experts and cases introduced by participating health care providers who desire consultation.

Eligibility:
HIVLN encourages participation from HIV care teams made up of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, dentists. social workers, case managers, mental health workers, health educators, medical assistants, navigators, outreach workers and other care team members working together to improve health outcomes for patients living with HIV.

Curriculum:
HIVLN’s curriculum is an extensive list of HIV-relevant health topics that should be the foundation of any HIV care provider’s clinical education. Our curriculum maps to the National HIV Curriculum. Health topics listed in the curriculum are covered over approximately a 2-year period. Topic selection is influenced by length of time since a particular topic has been addressed, current trends in HIV care and prevention, and needs of our learner base.

Evaluation:
HIV learners that are new to HIVLN perform a pre-session evaluation which assesses their knowledge, confidence, and attitudes on relevant health topics related to HIV care and prevention. This assessment is conducted upon a learner’s first registration for a session. Post-session evaluations conducted assess the learner’s opinion of the overall quality of speakers, faculty, session format, usefulness of the subject matter in their daily practice, and whether the learning objectives were met. In addition, our evaluation maps knowledge gained to each of the 5 steps in the HIV Care Continuum (HIV Testing and Diagnosis, Linkage to Care, Engagement & Retention in Care, Prescribed ART, and Viral Suppression). Evaluation also assesses a learner’s intent to change the way they provide services based on the knowledge gained, whether they can apply the information learned to their service setting, and whether they intent to seek additional HIV training. Lastly, the post-session evaluation rates their knowledge and confidence levels about the content presentation before and after a session

This presentation would showcase interactive web conferencing and collaboration tools used to engage in thoughtful clinical discussion on topics that have direct impact to a provider's practice, and foster a longitudinal learning community of providers that return to HIVLN to increase their knowledge, skills and confidence in providing competent health services to people living with or at risk for HIV.
