Digital Accessibility: A Blind User’s Experience with Email

Time:
11:00 AM to 11:40 AM
Room:
Genentech Hall S204
Track:
Collaboration & Engagement
Description:

Sponsored by IT GovernanceThis session is about a blind user’s experience with email. We offer beginner tips to produce accessible emails to create a better connection with your audience.

Learn how simple things such as meaningful subject lines and accessible content can build trust with your audience and ensure your message is heard.

Marc Sutton, a screen reader user, will be our special guest to demo “before and after” email samples created in Outlook.

Marc is appreciative and supportive of people at UCSF who are trying to fix barriers to digital content and welcomes the opportunity to talk about his experiences and educate people about accessibility issues.

The session will start with introductions to digital accessibility, Marc Sutton, and the assistive technology he uses to interact with his computer called a screen reader that reads aloud the content.

Attendees will learn how someone with a visual disability experiences email. We will demonstrate selected emails where Marc encounters barriers to content. Common barriers include links, images used as content, videos, and tables.

Then solutions will be shown so a non-blind user can quickly understand the screen reader experience and easily incorporate tips into email workflows to make UCSF email content inclusive to all.

If you've ever wondered about how a person with a visual disability reads email, now is the chance to learn about their experience and get your questions answered.

Session Type:
Skill Level:
Beginner
Previous Knowledge:

How to create an email in Outlook. This session is especially useful for UCSF Communicators that send out mass emails department-wide or university-wide. No knowledge of digital accessibility is required to attend.

Speaker Experience:

As the UCSF Web Standards Program Manager, I create awareness about digital accessibility and reach out to the UCSF community to help them learn how to make content inclusive to all. I have experience working with UCSF communicators 1:1 when inaccessible emails are brought to my attention and offer best practices and tips on how to improve the accessibility. Because this is a recurring issue, I wanted to bring this message to a wider UCSF audience.
