Upon completion of this presentation, attendees of this session will be able to:

  • Articulate how online education supports the teaching mission at UCSF
  • Define the role of instructional designers as a key partner in developing online education
  • Identify one or more best practices that can be incorporated into online education to increase student engagement.

UCSF’s mission of advancing health worldwide is actualized in its graduate-level educational programs in the life sciences and health professions. This education imperative is supported through strategies such as online learning that applies scalable, inclusive, accessible and flexible design. Online learning strategies can support learners/constituents across geographic boundaries, academically across learning needs and experientially in a way that is engaging and effective. Creating effective and engaging online coursework depends on a SMART approach to instructional design. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely)

This presentation will discuss effective teamwork between instructional designers and faculty, and illustrate design principles for building fully online and hybrid courses that engages and supports flexible learning.

Through examples and case studies of courses from Online Education, DEB and the School of Nursing’s DNP program, the presentation will illustrate: (1) how to engage faculty in the development and implementation of the learning management system (LMS) and video/digital media production, (2) the use of online collaboration tools such as Zoom, Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE), UCSF BOX, (3) using video to innovate and collaborate, e.g. with team meetings, guest speakers and peer-peer interactions, (4) design of a program that can be scaled, (5) best practices for assessing of learning and participant satisfaction.
